What is Mindfulness and How Can It Help?
Mindfulness is a scientifically-based approach to developing focused attention and emotional regulation. Mindfulness means paying attention in the present moment to our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, or surrounding environment. It can be defined simply as noticing what’s happening right now. It also includes the cultivation of positive states of mind such as empathy and kindness.
Studies find that learning mindfulness benefits children in terms of improved attention, emotion regulation, behaviour in school, empathy and understanding of others, social skills, anxiety, and stress.
Some examples of how we use mindfulness in our hour long class are noticing and naming our feelings, using mindful breathing to calm anxiety and improve focus, or pausing when feeling frustrated or impatient.
